Corral at Ghost Ranch—The Story

I was driving along the entrance road to Ghost Ranch, my first ever visit. I had read all the stories about the area, especially the ones describing how Georgia O’Keefe loved to paint what she saw in the area. So, I was prepared to see beauty, amazing beauty. But this time it looked like I was also racing a huge storm that was moving into the area. One of the first places I saw after turning off the highway was this corral. It has been in various movies of the Old West, so it was immediately recognizable. Some sunlight broke through, bathing part of the scene in special light, so I stopped my car, grabbed my camera, and took this photograph. A nice introduction to a special place.

Storm at Chimney Rock—The Story

An adventure trip to Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu turned out to be a place of beautiful and colorful geologic formations. Its history includes having been the place Georgia O’Keefe loved to work, so inspired was she by this unique location. Chimney Rock was just one of the many unusual formations that called out for a longer gaze. The storm clouds were moving in when a ray of fading sunshine opened up a bit on the rock, and a photograph of the moment was born.

Sunset at Ghost Ranch—The Story

Geologic formations at Ghost Ranch are truly amazing and wonderful to experience. Colors of rock canyon walls are varied and thought provoking. How did they come to be? Why are they so colorful? They are especially rich in color at sunset. As twilight begins, the red rock color becomes more and more saturated. As I enjoyed an evening hike, I saw the red rock, golden yellow fall color of the Cottonwoods and the full moon, all in one view. A good scene to capture.

Tufts of Grass in the Afternoon Sun — The Story

I was looking all around, watching the changing patterns of light and color as the sun set. I was mostly focused on Chimney Rock across the canyon from where I stood. I looked down at my feet and saw the tufts of dry grass all around that had turned a bright yellow in the rays of the setting sun. It would be gone in seconds.
