Clouds

Giant Scoop — The Story

I was so fascinated with the clouds. Ever since arriving in New Mexico, it felt like I was always looking up at the grand variety of cloud formations. Of course the state is well known for a high number of days of cloudless sunshine, so the beautiful, huge, panoramas and horizons of clouds were doubly special. This one was taking over the entire view from my backyard. What was I to think? Was it an invasion of some sort? Was a huge storm on its way? What did this major cloud formation signify? We may never know, but here’s a photo!

Puffy Explosion — The Story

No doubt about it. It’s really easy to be mesmerized by New Mexico’s vast landscape horizon and especially with the cloud patterns. Of all the patterns I’d seen since moving to the state, this one was really different. I found myself eager to learn about the many and varied cloud patterns of New Mexico, what did they mean, what kind of weather was about to happen, and especially about this one that looked like hundreds of cottony puff balls were exploding across the sky.

Variety — The Story

Each time I drive by the Sacramento Mountains, they portray a different signature. It’s never boring. Always a variety. This time, there were two distinctive types of clouds overhead. Still a student of reading the clouds for indications of weather, I could only guess what might be about to happen. It sure looked like a rainstorm was moving in close to the peaks, but higher overhead the weather seemed quite calm. Variety. The curiosity and beauty of it.

Storm Over Sierra Blanca — The Story

That drive on route 54 is always so interesting to me, mainly for the beauty of the great Sacramento Mountains but also for the changing weather seen through the clouds. I’m always glancing one way or the other to try not to miss anything! This time the storm was moving in quite close, the clouds were tall and dark, but there was just enough light under them to get a peak of the light dusting of snow on Sierra Blanca. It was lovely.

Rainbow — The Story

I was getting closer and closer to a rain storm over the Sacramento’s. I was bound to run into it. There was no way to avoid it. Just then, the sun made a mark on the falling rain and showed a bit of rainbow. The storm just didn’t seem quite so foreboding after that!

Crescent — The Story

It’s pretty easy to get up in the wide expanse of the New Mexico sky. Here I was fascinated by the bright sunlight on the edges of the clouds. It was sunset and right in the middle of the crescent shaped clouds was a crescent moon.

Sunset Peek — The Story

A last glance at the setting sun, giving us a real treat out from under that heavy layer of dark clouds.

Sunset Jewels — The Story

It may be hard for some to accept, but once you’ve lived here you know, the New Mexico sunsets can be intense, saturated in color, jewel like. This was one of them!

Distant Rain — The Story

There were several rain showers happening over the distant the San Andres mountains. But there even seemed to be a shower at a very unusual angle in the center of this shot. Maybe high winds blowing it off course?

Light Under Storm Clouds — The Story

Anything seems possible now. There’s definitely a storm over the Sacramento’s. But there was also this bright sun light highlighting a wide expanse. Where had the sun broken through?

Wispy — The Story

It looked like tentacles reaching out, further and further across the sky. What kind of weather were we about to experience?
